British Columbia Premier Christy Clark visited TWU’s Laurentian Leadership Centre (LLC) in Ottawa on Tuesday, November 29. Premier Clark toured the building and spoke to students and alumni of the Laurentian Leadership Program.
Clark challenged the students, “People of character want to change their communities for the better.” She encouraged them to take leadership to make positive change. Clark spoke of her own political path, having worked in a federal political office before being elected as a provincial MLA in 1996.
“We are deeply honoured that the Premier visited our campus,” said Janet Epp Buckingham, LLB. LLD., director of the Laurentian Leadership Centre. “Our program is very innovative and gives BC students great opportunities to experience politics and public-policy making in the national capital.”
The Laurentian Leadership Centre is a live-in, extension program operated in Ottawa by Trinity Western University. Upper year university students come for one semester to live in the Metcalfe Street heritage building for a program consisting of three political science classes and internship placements. The internship program allows students to earn academic credit through a professional work-learn experience with an approved government office, non-profit organization or business. It is “hands on” training that provides an opportunity for students to apply theoretical knowledge to actual work situations. The LLC is located in the historical Booth Mansion a few blocks from Parliament Hill.
