International MBA launches in China

This fall, Trinity Western University will deliver its International Master of Business Administration program (IMBA) in Tianjin, China, on the campus of the Tianjin University of Finance and Economics (TUFE). The Great Wall MBA program launch sees Trinity Western recognized as the only university authorized for foreign delivery of an MBA program in Tianjin.

“The partnership is a natural extension of the long-standing collaborative relationship between TWU and TUFE,” said Associate Provost Philip Laird, Ph.D. “TWU offers a BBA-to-MBA degree with TUFE, which has been very successful.”

MBA Program Director Murray MacTavish, Ph.D., recognizes the dynamic learning environment in China; he has studied Chinese leadership and has made 22 trips to the country over the past seven years. “Business is a critical catalyst for economic development,” he said. “We are excited to be able to contribute to business development in China through the delivery of TWU’s IMBA program.”

Using an executive MBA model, the IMBA program delivers courses over two weekends, every four to six weeks of the 18-month program. TWU’s IMBA utilizes a dynamic learning model in which students actively participate in the classroom environment. Students will be required to prepare for each weekend residency, which will be followed by assignments requiring further research and analysis. Trinity Western faculty will travel to China to deliver in-class instruction during these course residencies.

In collaboration with TUFE, TWU will provide six foundation courses prior to the commencement of the program. This pre-program coursework is designed to enhance the students’ skills in preparation for the program. Upon graduation, students come away with an internationally recognized degree.

“The TWU faculty team have experience working and teaching in China, so they are well-prepared to deliver a high quality educational program in Tianjin,” said MacTavish. “We have a passion for developing values-based leaders and helping them grow in their business competencies.”

The IMBA program will build on connections between Chinese business leaders in Tianjin and in Canada, such that business ideas and opportunities can be exchanged and developed. “As a professor, I believe we have to listen to and understand the local business community and culture,” said MacTavish.

On October 17, 2013, TWU will host The Great Wall MBA launch reception in Tianjin, on the TUFE campus. For more information about the program, please contact MBA Director Murray MacTavish, Ph.D., at murray.mactavish@twu.ca.
