Trinity Western University presents a pair of midweek musical escapes on November 26 and December 3, running the gamut from Renaissance music to jazz. For a live music experience that’s entertaining, eclectic, and affordable, come to Chamber Music Night and Jazz Night, presented by TWU’s School of the Arts, Media + Culture (SAMC).
On November 26 at 7:30pm, the intimate Chamber Music Night features piano, violin, and cello performing all four movements of Johannes Brahms’ Piano Trio No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 101. The piano trio is coached by Vancouver Opera violinist Heilwig von Koenigsloew. Under the direction of SAMC Music professor Jon Thompson, the SAMC Renaissance Singers will perform the 16th Century Missa Pange Lingua, one of the most famous mass settings by Franco-Flemish composer Josquin des Prez.
The ever-popular Jazz Night returns on December 3 at 7:30pm. To kick off the evening, the new SAMC Jazz Quintet makes an encore appearance after their debut at the Township of Langley’s Until Everyone Comes Home. This fun, retro ensemble is gearing up to perform in SAMC’s swinging spring musical, The Drowsy Chaperone. Joining them onstage is songbird Charlotte Elgersma, the musical’s leading lady. Closing out the night is the SAMC Jazz Combo, directed by Tony Gallo. Their program encapsulates the music of the ‘60s and early ‘70s including artists such as Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, and Herbie Hancock. Influences of jazz guitar greats Wes Montgomery and Django Reinhardt figure prominently as well.
