To mark the celebration of United Nations World Water Day on Tuesday, March 22, a brief noon-hour concert on the Langley campus will include water-related tunes in the chime’s repertoire as well as melodies composed and arranged by TWU music students over the past several years.
Through the advocacy of national registered charity, Water Ambassadors Canada (WAC), a special concert played on Trinity Western University’s campus chime will ring out to mark United Nations World Water Day on March 22.
TWU’s event is part of a broader national campaign that includes the “lighting up in blue” of iconic landmarks across Canada to raise awareness about the global water crisis. Although the campanile will not be lit up with blue floodlights like other landmarks the concert will be repeated at 8:00PM that evening.
Showcasing student compositions and arrangements
The melodies played will include
1. Modal Change in A (sequenced and performed by TWU student, James Tseung)
2. Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head (Burt Bacharach (1928 -) / Hal David (1921-2012)
3. Ellacombe (#3) (Composer unknown; Ca 18th C. Arranged and performed by TWU student, Chloe Thiessen)
4. In dreams; from The Lord of the Rings movie. (Howard Shore, 1946- . Arranged and performed by TWU student, Danica Steenkamp)
5. A Murmuration (For Erica Grimm) (Composed and performed by TWU student, Chloe Thiessen)
6. On the beautiful, blue Danube, Op. 314; AKA Blue Danube waltz (Johann Strauss II 1825-1899)
7. Modal Change in A (sequenced and performed by TWU student, James Tseung)
The concert will open with the first public performance of “Modal Change in A,” sequenced and performed by TWU Music student, James Tseung. The music is described by Library staff Elizabeth Kreiter as a fluid piece that "moves through a four-note sequence to evoke a broad, spacious, and ultimately consonant sound. Its ambiguous tonality—neither strongly major nor minor—invites the listener to rest in a moment of subtle harmony."
Bringing attention to a global need
Tuesday's concert will help everyone within hearing range of the chimes think about our most precious and essential commodity—water.
Chime patron and co-founder of Water Ambassadors Canada, Heather Alloway, says “We can all do something to raise awareness for the work to provide clean drinking water. Clean drinking water saves lives.”
“Enjoying clean water is part of our identity as Canadians. Yet right now 1 in 10 people around the world lack access to clean drinking water and over two billion people lack access to basic sanitation,” WAC CEO Brian Johns said. “Going without clean water is the number one cause of death and disease in the world. But the good news is that the solution is simple: give people access to clean water.”
About Water Ambassadors Canada
Water Ambassadors Canada receives generous contributions from individuals, church groups, and businesses across Canada who share the charity’s mission to change lives with clean water. The organization is currently working to raise $100,000 in a matching donation campaign to fund new water projects around the world in 2022. WAC works with in-country partners to deliver the resources communities need to access and maintain a sufficient supply of clean water. These life-saving tools include: filters and filter stations to purify water and eliminate microbes; chlorinators to treat contaminated water; and the construction or repair of wells to create nearby water sources when access is scarce. WAC also provides handwashing stations for churches, schools, and villages as well as basic hygiene education that can be passed down between generations within a community.
