Led by forward Daniela Gerig and keeper Kristen Funk, the No. 2 Trinity Western Spartans defeated the No. 9 University of Alberta Pandas in the Canada West championship match on November 5 at Rogers Park on TWU's campus.
Gerig was the player of the match with a goal in regulation and the shootout winner, while Funk made four saves in regulation and two in the shootout to lead the Spartans to their fourth Canada West Championship (2004, 2006, 2009, 2011).
“I’m overjoyed and excited with the win. It is nice being back as Canada West champions,” said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “It was two very good teams and it was tight all the way. We persevered and hung there, even in the shootout we stayed strong and Funk came up with the big save like she always does.”
It was the final match at Rogers Park for TWU’s Melissa Mobilio, Daniela Gerig and Alexi Foster. “I’m really pleased for them. It's not a bad way to finish their career here,” said Roxburgh about his graduating players.
