“It was quite an adventure!” — Cassiel Cao, BA Theatre
Cassiel Cao, from China, is a fifth year theatre major who stars in TWU SAMC’s current show, Without Rule of Law (W.R.O.L.).
Cao is graduating in December, and this play is her final show.
When she first came to Canada, Cao had hoped to pursue a challenge, something “new and different,” she said.
However, Cao didn’t begin her journey at TWU as a Theatre major. After a time spent exploring a variety of studies including media and psychology, one day, Cao joined a Theatre department production crew.
She helped to produce the shows, and while watching, she discovered that she was not satisfied to remain behind the scenes. So, she began to audition.
Soon, Cao had several credits to her name, including Anne of Green Gables and the student-devised Upside Down Christmas. Earlier this year, she played Sebastiana in Shakespeare’s The Tempest. In W.R.O.L., Cao stars as Jo.
“It was quite an adventure!” Cao said, about the a making of W.R.O.L., which has been adapted for film (in order to accommodate COVID-19 health and safety measures) and will be featured online.
Cao was excited to adapt the play for film. “I’m such a big fan of film,” she said. Cao feels that she has been lucky to work with a group of “beautiful and talented people” who are part of TWU’s Theatre department.
In describing her character, Jo, Cao said, “she’s a very passionate person,” but also hinted that Jo had experienced “some trauma in her childhood.”
Yet, Cao concluded that Jo is “the kind of person I admire.”
In the future, Cao aspires to write and create theatre, and she hopes to enter the Canadian film industry.
W.R.O.L. is streaming online Dec. 1–13, 2020. The opening show premieres Dec. 1 at 7:30pm and will include a behind-the-scenes featurette and Zoom talkback with the cast and directors.
