TWU’s 2018 Mel Smith Lecture examines the role of law in religious freedom in Canada
Langley, BC: Trinity Western University’s 19th annual Mel Smith Lecture on March 9 explores a timely and relevant theme for Christians in Canada today. The talk by renowned speaker Dr. Andrew Bennett is called The Christian and the Public Square: Truth and the Messy Business of Citizenship. It explores religious liberty in Canada within the context of how Christians relate to government and the public square. Members of the public and the university community are invited to attend this free event.
Dr. Andrew Bennett is widely recognized in both Canada and the United States as a leading authority on religious freedom. He served as Canada’s first Ambassador for Religious Freedom and headed up Canada’s Office of Religious Freedom. Currently, Father Deacon Bennett is a Senior Fellow at Cardus, Canada’s faith-based think tank, where he is Programme Director of Cardus Law, which looks at the role of law in society with a particular focus on religious freedom in Canada. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Religious Freedom Institute in Washington, D.C.

The Mel Smith Lectures contribute to dialogue and learning on significant contemporary public policy issues in Canada. The 2018 lecture will be of particular interest to all those seeking to understand the rapid erosion of religious liberty in Canada today.
Each year the Mel Smith Scholarship is awarded to a TWU student studying Canadian History or Political Science who has achieved high academic standing and demonstrates an interest and expertise in Canadian constitutionalism, constitutional and electoral reform, or Western Canadian issues. The recipient of the 2018-2019 Mel Smith Scholarship will be presented at the lecture on March 9.
The lecture series and scholarship are named in honour of Mel Smith, QC who served for over 20 years as the ranking constitutional advisor to the British Columbia government.
