The Canadian Academy of Nursing Fellowship Program recognizes and celebrates the most accomplished nurses in Canada and across all domains of nursing practice. This year, Dr. Barbara Astle is among 18 remarkable nurses to be inducted into the Canadian Academy of Nursing Fellowship Program.
In a letter to the 2022 Fellows, Dr. Sylvain Brousseau, president of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), expressed, "the CNA established the Canadian Academy of Nursing in the fall of 2019 to identify, educate, support, and celebrate nursing leaders across all the regulated categories and domains of practice. One of the ways we celebrate the amazing contributions of nurses is through the Academy’s Fellowship program, which is designed to recognize and celebrate highly accomplished nurses in Canada."
Honouring the best of the nursing profession, academy Fellows earn the right to use the credential Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Nursing (FCAN).

About Dr. Barbara Astle
Dr. Barbara Astle is a Professor and Director for the Masters of Nursing Program at Trinity Western University. Astle is a nurse leader, educator, and researcher in global and planetary health. She has contributed to numerous global and planetary health educational and research initiatives at the local, national, and international levels. She has served on various global organizations including past Chair for the Consortium of Universities for Global Health competency subcommittee, and the Canadian Association for Global Health. She co-developed the first Canadian tri-university interdisciplinary graduate global health course applying equity-centred principles; and the transdisciplinary Planetary Health Education Framework. Astle’s program of research on health equity, human rights and albinism builds upon her years working in global health. She is an inductee in the Canadian Women in Global Health, which recognizes the achievements of established leaders in global health, and a founding member for Women in Global Health in Canada. Astle completed her BScN, MN, and PhD from the University of Alberta.
