Giving thanks for 'every good and perfect gift': Fall 2022 semester in review

As we welcome a new year in January 2023, we give thanks for the good work in progress at Trinity Western University. Here is a brief overview of the highlights of this past semester since the start of the academic year in September 2022. 

The following are just some examples of the many, many good things taking place in our midst. We look forward to sharing more stories and celebrations in the near future.


A new brand expression: Equipped for Life

As a private Christian university with campuses in Langley, Richmond, and Ottawa, Trinity Western University welcomes students from over 80 countries. In September 2022, Trinity Western University launched a new brand to express the University's refocuses on student experience and a renewal of its commitment to equip graduates for all areas of their future in life and career.

Executive MBA program launches at TWU Richmond

Trinity Western University expands the Executive MBA (EMBA) program to its Richmond campus just one year after successfully launching the program in 2021 on its main campus in Langley, BC. As part of the distinctive of a TWU education, the EMBA program seeks to develop ethical and astute business leaders who are attentive to the values that are foundational to how people operate in the world, and how these values can be applied to create positive and dynamic change.

New building honours Robert G. Kuhn

In recognition of President Emeritus Bob Kuhn's lifetime of learning, discovery, leadership, and positive impact at Trinity Western, the University has named its newest facility in his honour. Students, faculty, and staff began teaching and learning inside the Kuhn Centre's classrooms this past summer, and in September 2022, TWU officially dedicated the Kuhn Centre through a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration.

TWU School of Nursing advances Indigenous curriculum

Nursing students at TWU who take courses in Indigenous integration receive a six-week immersive experience into Indigenous history, culture, and ways of knowing particularly as it applies to health care. Kathleen Lounsbury is Part-time Instructor and Consultant for Curricular Indigenous Integration in TWU’s School of Nursing and a member of the School of Nursing's Indigenous Advisory Council. She comes from Namgis First Nation and the traditional Kwakwaka'wakw territories of Alert Bay, B.C.

TWU School of Nursing launches a new PhD program

Trinity Western University has provided CASN-accredited, BCCNM-approved undergraduate nursing education (BSN) for more than 25 years. Additionally, TWU has offered a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program since 2009. In August 2021, TWU received approval from the BC Ministry of Education to launch the Doctorate in Philosophy of Nursing (PhD) program — the program welcomed its first cohort of students this fall. As the first faith-based doctoral program in nursing in Canada, Trinity Western's PhD in Nursing prepares nurses to be educators and leaders within academic, healthcare, and government settings.

TWU researchers address climate change, food security, and explore breakthrough technologies

Dr. David Clements and TWU students are counting the cost of the B.C. 2021 floods as measured by the spread of invasive knotweed, in a project funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Meanwhile, Professor Karen Steensma’s latest research aims to balance needs among farmers, hunters and fishers, and to increase the food security of the Hawaiian Islands. Dr. Chadron M. Friesen’s federally funded research in fluorine chemistries will improve bio-based aerospace materials and medical monitoring systems.

Laurentian Leadership Centre (LLC) celebrates 20 years

In October, TWU’s Laurentian Leadership Centre (LLC) celebrated 20 years of faithfully pursuing its mission to equip students to thrive in the public square. Students who attend TWU’s LLC program in Ottawa gain work experience through field placements, complete three upper-level university courses, and experience living in community within a historic mansion in the heart of the nation’s capital.

TWU Richmond's Lansdowne location celebrates two years

Lansdowne in Richmond is TWU Richmond campus’ newest location. Since opening in the spring of 2020, the Lansdowne location has served a global student body through a mix of online and in-person classes, specializing in the areas of leadership and business. In November 2022, TWU Richmond's Lansdowne location hosted an open house to celebrate over two years of serving local and international students.

TWU Fall graduation ceremony

Trinity Western University's 2022 fall graduation ceremony honoured over 550 graduands from TWU GLOBAL and graduate programs. Canadian hockey player and coach with Trinity Western Spartans women’s hockey team, Sarah Potomak, was the 2022 graduate valedictorian for the fall graduating class.

TWU School of Education showcases new facilities, programs

In November, the School of Education hosted an open house at its new location in the DeVries Centre, a freshly renovated space that provides double the previous classroom capacity. Trinity Western University’s School of Education offers teacher training at the undergraduate and graduate levels, equipping current and aspiring teachers for lives of meaningful impact in schools and communities in B.C. and beyond. New graduate certificate programs in Christian School Education and Outdoor Environmental Education provide more options for teachers to upgrade their training.

TWU partners with Christian colleges in India

In November, TWU President Dr. Mark Husbands signed an Expression of Interest with Dr. John Varghese, Principal of St. Stephen’s College in Delhi, India. This signing was among the highlights of President Mark Husbands’ first goodwill tour of India

Trinity Western University and Stella Maris College in Chennai, India also co-hosted their 7th annual leadership conference to showcase their collaborative initiatives and engage in meaningful discussions on the topic of "Innovating Sustainable Leadership in areas of Health Care, Climate Change, Hybrid Education and Social Welfare."

Christmas at the Chan returns

Back for the first time after two years, Trinity Western University’s Christmas at the Chan concert returned to inspire audiences to “awe and wonder”. Christmas at the Chan featured TWU’s choral ensembles plus a full orchestra, all under the direction of award-winning conductor Dr. Joel Tranquilla.
