Every year around January 27, the world remembers the millions of Jews and other victims killed during the Holocaust. The theme of this year's Holocaust Memorial Day is "Be the light in the darkness".
On the occasion of Holocaust Memorial Day 2021, Dr. Shane Durbach, Associate Professor of Chemistry, reflects on the story of one woman, who was sent to a Nazi concentration camp at the age of six, and survived.
He writes, "Oh, how my mind wishes it had not seen that, or begun down the path of wondering what happened to all those Jewish children who were sent to concentration camps. It struggles to suppress some of the images it retrieves that are hung on the walls of Yad Vashem."
"It aches as it recalls the voices of those who deny that this ever happened."
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Dr. Durbach achieved his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. He moved from Johannesburg to B.C., Canada four years ago. His research interests lie in investigating various synthetic strategies for shaped carbon nanomaterials, and he is currently focussing on finding applications for nanomaterials in areas such as composites for low-cost building materials and other beneficial community related uses, and photocatalysis (e.g. through the conversion of carbon dioxide to fuels).
