MA Leadership students joined 70,000 viewers worldwide at the 2022 Global Leadership Summit. Here’s what they learned.

To hear from start-up founders, CEOs, authors, and leaders from across the fields of education, technology, church ministry, food and beverage, travel, and entertainment—all in one day — is a rare opportunity.

This is the kind of learning that MA Leadership students experienced on October 20, 2022 at the Global Leadership Summit’s recorded broadcast event, hosted at a conference site in Langley. The original meeting first took place in-person in Illinois (USA), in August 2022.

At the Global Leadership Summit, MA Leadership students joined approximately 70,000 people globally who viewed the conference recordings from various locations around the world.

This October, MA Leadership students joined approximately 70,000 people globally who viewed the conference recordings from various locations
around the world.

Students finished the 2022 Global Leadership Summit feeling motivated and inspired. Many were eager to share their takeaways, reflections, and concepts learned.

Baby Shiny said, “As a leadership student, I considered this a wonderful experience. I am very grateful to Dr. Derrick Mohamed for taking the initiative to provide us with this chance as a part of our program.”

Thinking of one particular speaker, Baby added, “[Her] experience gave me the energy and confidence to handle my rejections and enthusiastically follow my heart into the greatness of leadership. That was a valuable life lesson for me to learn from and use in my own struggles and challenging circumstances.”

Jae Woo learned that leadership is developed through experiences, “A leader is not born [a leader],” Jae said, “it is about becoming the leader through reflecting over the situations.”

Likewise, Chanchal Dhiman noted that "leadership is not about success all the time; failures also teach a person to become an effective leader.” Chanchal added another reflection, “Leadership is serving others and keeping oneself in others' shoes. Thinking and feeling from others' minds.” Ann Mary Jose remembers the lesson of the “leadership paradoxes,” which is the contrasting traits of a leader, such as confidence with humility.

One new thing Harjit Kaur learned was the concept of creating dopamine, “I came to know that dopamine is a chemical for connection that exists in your system that gives you energy to listen, open up, and connect. We can create dopamine by asking right question.” Harjit also remembers a speaker who taught listeners “to focus on people, and focus on creation instead of materialistic results.”

Biji Pillai learned that relying on a team is important, “I learned that in this journey there is no traveling alone, and I should hold my pack together wherever I go.” Ayeesha Sultana said, “After hearing these leaders speak, I felt refreshed, and I will use their suggestions to improve my leadership.”

Many students expressed gratitude for the chance to participate in this conference while studying at TWU. TWU’s MA Leadership program aims to develop confident and effective servant-leaders. The program offers multiple specializations — including business, education, and health care — and includes a capstone project where students apply the theory learned and develop leadership capacity.
