November Art Talks at TWU

Trinity Western University’s School of the Arts, Media + Culture (SAMC) presents a series of engaging Art Talks throughout the month of November.  Join SAMC artists on the TWU campus for intimate discussions with professional artists about the impact of their art across the Lower Mainland:

November 6 – Art for the Marginalized:  Stories from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside

Guest speaker Jenny Hawkinson is a recent graduate of the SAMC Art + Design program, now working for Mission Possible in Vancouver's downtown eastside.  Mission Possible (www.mission-possible.ca) seeks to empower artists in that neighbourhood through providing studio space, hosting professional development workshops, and other similar initiatives.

Jenny will speak about her work with Mission Possible as well as her own public street art, and how she sees it as an extension of her faith practice.  Gather in the TWU Art Studio to hear more about the inspiring work of artists like Jenny and their passion for making art accessible--particularly for the "marginalized."

Event Details:  Wednesday, Nov. 6 from 4pm – 5:15pm, Art Studio (Room 136, Robert N. Thompson Building, TWU Campus, 22500 University Drive, Langley).  Please RSVP to samc@twu.ca.

November 20 – Conversations with an Art Therapist

Join the SAMC Art + Design Department for an intimate talk with Nancy Orlikow (BFA, University of Manitoba; Graduate Diploma in Art Therapy, British Columbia School of Art Therapy), an art therapist who has worked mostly with children and adolescents and their families, primarily with abuse issues and trauma.  She is passionate about the use of the arts as a means to greater creative expression, self-awareness, and coping with trauma and transition.  This event is ideal for anyone interested in pursuing a career in art therapy, or learning more about the healing power of the arts.

Event Details:  Wednesday, Nov. 20 from 4pm – 5:15pm, Art Studio (Room 136, Robert N. Thompson Building, TWU Campus, 22500 University Drive, Langley).  Please RSVP to samc@twu.ca.

November 27 – “Invoking Venus” Artist Talk with Catherine Stewart

Award-winning printmaker and photographer Catherine Stewart (MFA, University of British Columbia) will speak about her colourful exhibit in the TWU President’s Gallery.  Her series of close-up, abstracted digital photographs explore the use of colour and pattern, among both birds and humans, for attracting mates.  For a sneak preview of Catherine Stewart’s work, visit www.catherinestewart.net.  The “Invoking Venus: Courtship Colour Studies” exhibit will be on display at TWU Nov. 27, 2013 – Jan. 10, 2014.

Event Details:  Wednesday, Nov. 27 from 4pm – 5:15pm, President’s Gallery (2nd floor, Reimer Student Centre, TWU Campus, 22500 University Drive, Langley).  Please RSVP to samc@twu.ca.
