“We aim to create channels and platforms to let Chinese students know more about Canadian culture, Trinity community and Christian culture."
— Anxin (Tiger) Hu, third year Business major, Chinese Culture Club founding president
Handing out free bubble tea on campus. Hosting an all-nations game night for TWU students. These were just some of the recent community-building activities of TWU’s newly established Chinese Culture Club.
Established by Chinese students at TWU, the club was officially confirmed by Trinity Western’s Student Association (TWUSA) in 2019.
“We aim to create channels and platforms to let Chinese students know more about Canadian culture, Trinity community and Christian culture,” said Anxin (Tiger) Hu, the club’s founding president.
Hu is a third year Business major from Mainland China. He was a TEDx speaker for his high school in Zhengzhou, Henan.
When Hu and his friends founded the Chinese Culture Club at TWU in 2019, they had a vision for culturally Chinese students to “help each other, and connect with their school at Trinity.”
“We help Chinese students adapt to student life aboard, and be more involved in community. We let Trinity know how international students think about campus life,” Hu said.
Hu says that his favourite thing about TWU is the vibrant community life, which is fostered in relationships among students, and among students and professors.
“We have a lot of opportunities to communicate, and professors on campus are kind and patient,” he said.
Within the first year of its founding, the club was already enhancing the cultural connections at TWU. They hosted a globally-themed game night in the Trinity Commons. “We held a game night and invited all nations of Trinity to join us. That was successful and amazing!” said Hu.
During the Lunar New Year in February 2021, the club partnered with a local café franchise, Bubble World in Langley, and shared free bubble tea on campus.
Outside of community life, Hu keeps busy with his studies. Among courses he recommends are ones in marketing, organizational behavior and micro economics.
“Firstly, Marketing is my favorite,” said Hu. “I am a person who likes to get along with people. That course lets people have a chance to deal with the real case studies.”
