“As a community, TWU loves to celebrate with each member as they meet goals and make achievements....Research that stays in the hands of the researcher is of little value, while research that enters the minds of the wider community leads to growth and discovery.”
— Elizabeth Kreiter, Assistant Librarian, Special: Reference and Information Literacy
The upcoming TWU Undergraduate Research Conference (UGRC) on April 9, 2021 is an opportunity for students to showcase their scientific work and research results. The UGRC is a peer-reviewed conference that will feature presentations from a variety of disciplines, demonstrating scientific excellence and achievement at the undergraduate level.
Participation in the event provides students with the opportunity to engage with other academics and to share their accomplishements with a wider audience.
“As a community, TWU loves to celebrate with each member as they meet goals and make achievements,” said Elizabeth Kreiter, Assistant Librarian, Special: Reference and Information Literacy.
“It’s a great starting point for students to learn how to communicate the importance of their work with a broader audience and aligns with the TWU community’s commitment to good stewardship,” she said.
She added, “Research that stays in the hands of the researcher is of little value, while research that enters the minds of the wider community leads to growth and discovery.”
There are many benefits for students who participate.
“Learning how to share the results of their work is an essential skill for every academic,” Elizabeth explained. “It’s the answer to the ‘so what’ question. Why should anyone care about the excellent work you have done, if you haven’t taken the time to share it with anyone in a way that they can understand?”
Conferences can also become an important milestone in a student’s professional journey. “Student conferences are the best learning ground for researchers at the beginning of their career,” Elizabeth said.
“Producing research of the sort that can be presented at a conference venue is a major achievement, particularly at the undergraduate level, and everyone should have the opportunity to join in,” she said.
The conference is open to anyone who is interested to learn about research activity at TWU. Students, faculty, staff, family and members of the public are all welcome. Presenters will be doing their best to share their findings in a way that is accessible to people with no prior knowledge of their subject area.
