As Trinity Western University pursues its vision to see every graduate equipped, the University is also exploring new ways to partner with churches and organizations who have similar values and goals.
Towards this aim, earlier in January, TWU hosted a discussion with leaders of The Salvation Army, an international Christian organization.
Next to the Canadian government, The Salvation Army provides more social services to vulnerable populations than any other organization. The Salvation Army began its work in Canada in 1882, just fifteen years after Confederation, giving hope to those in need throughout the country. TWU board member Commissioner William Francis oversaw The Salvation Army’s work throughout Canada for four years prior to his retirement in 2011.
National (Toronto), Divisional (British Columbia) and Educational (Booth University College, Winnipeg) leadership from The Salvation Army who visited TWU represented a breath of experience and perspective. The joint meeting provided a valuable opportunity to explore ways for both organizations to support the other in advancement of faith-based organizational visions.
The day-long discussion between TWU and The Salvation Army was comprised of three sessions, each devoted to a different focus of listening, learning, and collaborating. The sessions began with the two organizations each sharing their visions and the work that they are accomplishing.
Throughout the day, leaders from both organizations spent time listening to each other, with the motivation of learning more about the good work that the other is doing. Delegates engaged in facilitated conversations around points of intersection and opportunities for partnership. The goal was to look for natural connections between the needs, resources, and expertise of both organizations. After sharing a meal together, the leaders ventured on a tour of TWU’s Langley campus.
The Salvation Army’s visit to TWU this month took place in conjunction with a province-wide Salvation Army meeting held in British Columbia.
