Langley, B.C.: Joining Trinity Western University as Associate Provost, Teaching and Learning, is Laurie Matthias, Ed.D., who will use her expertise in education and leadership to align student learning outcomes with instruction and assessment, resourcing faculty with teaching strategies based in the research of best practice. Dr. Matthias’s goal is for each student to find their place in God’s story while obtaining the education and skills they need to succeed in the professional marketplace. Under her leadership, everything within the purview of the Office of Teaching and Learning—the Learning Commons, the library, program development and review, the core curriculum, faculty professional learning seminars, and numerous other initiatives—will prioritize academic excellence and a holistic approach.
Before coming to Trinity Western University to begin her role on July 2, Matthias spent 12 years as an education faculty member at Trinity International University in Deerfield, Ill., where she also directed graduate programs and the Center for Integrative Faculty Development—a centre she founded for the entire university faculty. Dr. Matthias was the only faculty member awarded the President’s Prize for Excellence in Scholarship and Teaching twice in a five-year period.
Dr. Matthias’s pedagogical insight and academic leadership are a direct result of her educational journey and extensive practical experience teaching in secondary schools. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in English education, Laurie spent two decades teaching high school English, before resuming her graduate studies. She then went to Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va., and earned a Master of Education degree as well as a doctorate in higher education with an emphasis in teaching.
Laurie brings a passion for and expertise on the integration of faith and learning, and has a deep desire to promote a biblical understanding of diversity in the university community. She values each person’s role and contribution to the mission of the university and enjoys the synergy of collaboration and cooperation.

In addition to leading behind the scenes in academic and administrative capacities, Dr. Matthias also loves public speaking. She often accepts invitations to present thought-provoking speeches and sermons to inspire students, staff, and faculty and facilitate organic dialogue. Her vision for authentic community rooted in redemption, reconciliation, and renewal aligns with TWU’s values, particularly but not exclusively the recently added core value of Christian hospitality.
