Join the four Trinity Western University Choirs—Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, and Masterworks—for a concert program of uplifting ancient and modern choral music. In conjunction with the SAMC Festival of Arts, Media, and Culture, 90 voices will join together in Tune my Heart.
The performance will include works by Handel, Mendelssohn, Halley, Hogan, and Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms—this 20th century work features energetic and challenging music, setting various ancient psalm texts to a very contemporary musical idiom.
“This program in particular is both diverse and demanding,” said Caron Daley, Interim Director of Choral Activities. “It requires the choristers to sing in German and in Hebrew, master an array of styles, from Baroque to gospel, and to sing as a chamber ensemble, a mass choir, and a double choir. We’ve really enjoyed tackling the repertoire, especially the Bernstein Chichester Psalms.”
The night will also showcase Esther Cannon on harp, Cathrie Yuen on percussion, Edward Norman on organ, and a unique performance by countertenor Christopher McDonald (a baritone voice using falsetto), singing the part of David praying Psalm 23 in Hebrew.
“Often singing in falsetto is more comfortable than singing in my baritone range—it feels gentler and lighter,” McDonald said. “It is also more resonant. Basically, what this resonance means is that my falsetto can fill a concert hall with fewer decibels than my baritone can. That, I think, is pretty neat—perhaps a little symbolic of meekness inheriting the earth.”
Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to witness the vast range of talent in Trinity Western University’s choral programs. Tickets are $10 and are available at tunemyheart.eventbrite.com or at the door (limited seating).
