TWU Award of Excellence - 2018 Outstanding Collaboration Team Award to the School of Nursing

On August 20, 2018, the School of Nursing received the TWU 2018 Outstanding Collaboration Team Award for their work on a curriculum revision for the Bachelor of Science (BScN) program. The undertaking of such a momentous task has required the collaboration of the entire SON faculty and staff. Since 2014, the School of Nursing has worked tirelessly envisioning the curriculum for each year of the four year Undergraduate Nursing Program. This endeavor has involved the development of new courses, revising and updating existing courses, and resequencing some courses. In addition, the SON has introduced Harmonized Program Outcomes that level and integrate the BCCNP (British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals) entry-level competencies, Trinity Western University (TWU) nursing program outcomes, and the TWU Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) across the four years of the curriculum. To complete this comprehensive curriculum revision, the SON faculty worked in three clusters reflecting broad content areas within the curriculum: Wellness and Promotion, Illness and Chronicity, and Professional Nursing. What has made this process more complex is that the implementation of the revised curriculum has occurred simultaneously as the existing curriculum has been phased out. Currently, the SON is embarking on the implementation of the third year of the updated curriculum and the final year of the previous curriculum. Other highlights of this revised curriculum are the integration of Indigenous Health across the 4-year program; the addition of a new course entitled Global Health, Humanitarianism, and Global Missions; and the offering of two new electives – Spirituality in Nursing, and the Person-Centered Approach to Palliative Care. The implementation of the new curriculum will be completed in 2020.
