TWU Chamber Choir director Cathrie Yuen takes choral performances into creative locations

This spring, TWU’s Chamber Choir performed “In Paradisum,” by Canadian composer Kathleen Allen, inside the Reimer Student Centre underground parking lot at TWU's Langley campus.

It is just one of several creative spaces that the TWU Chamber Choir, directed by Cathrie Yuen, brought their musical performances this semester.

Yuen, Associate Conductor of the TWU choral program, is a graduate of TWU and also holds a Master’s degree in choral conducting from UBC. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Yuen is the founder of the Inspiro consortium, where she connects with members of the Canadian and international choral community, and leads workshops for choirs in the B.C. Lower Mainland.

The pandemic has placed certain restrictions on TWU's singers, but this has not stopped them from making music. This spring, they performed works by Johannes Brahms, Felix Mendelssohn — as well as a piece by Benjamin Sigerson, a 20-year-old composer from Vancouver, B.C. — among other selections.

Each performance was captured on video, recorded at various locations at TWU’s Langley campus.

One of the pieces, “Passion Prayer,” is composed by TWU music major Chloé Thiessen. Thiessen was interviewed by Vancouver Sun earlier this year for her virtual choral creations. She has also been comissioned to compose music for an upcoming Ellacombe chimes global marathon.
