TWU Exhibition Opens at the Jansen Art Center

On the eve of December, Lynden, Washington’s Jansen Art Center opened In Fieri, a group exhibition featuring the work of upper-level Art + Design students from Trinity Western University’s School of the Arts, Media + Culture (SAMC). There will be a special reception on January 11, 2014 that is open to the public.

In Fieri presents personal and external narratives being explored by the artists both intelligently and openly, from Emily Garrison’s metaphorical abstract painting of her fellow tree planters to Olivia deFleuriot de la Coliniére’s investigative portrait built of layers of oil paint.

“We are inviting viewers to engage with a dialogue on time and identity,” said student Mikaela Fuqua, a fourth-year Art + Design major whose photographs on display include “Through A Glass, Darkly” and “Life Underwater.”

The artists ask in their statement, “What shall we do with this moment we are in?” Each of the works on display is an exploration of this honest question, reflecting on processes of transition and metamorphosis.

The students of TWU are excited to have this international opportunity for their second group show of the year, a new partnership for an arts facility that is still relatively new in the Lynden community.

“We're thrilled to have this opportunity to feature such promising student artists from Trinity Western University,” said Courtney Jensen, Arts Director for the Jansen Art Center. “Our facility is an exciting new space here in Lynden, and people are just amazed when they walk in. With the current exhibition from SAMC, we have an impressive complement to our other arts programming."

Engaging the community is an essential part of the art center's mandate, Jensen said. "Through this exhibition, we're building bridges with our close neighbours across the border. Working with these students feels like we're removing that border altogether! It's a perfect fit."
