Where would Hollywood be without great music? From the unforgettable notes of John Williams’ Star Wars score to the classical masterpieces that have been inspiring filmmakers since the dawn of the “talkies,” some of the best stories are told through music. Music from the Movies, a concert weekend presented by Trinity Western University’s School of the Arts, Media + Culture (SAMC), promises a nostalgic experience for film fans and classical music aficionados alike. This tribute to the silver screen will be performed by the TWU Orchestra and Concert Band in Abbotsford November 22 and Langley November 23.
Conducted by Allan Thorpe, DMA, the SAMC Concert Band will begin the evening with the memorable 20th Century Fox fanfare arranged by Abbotsford’s Bill Workman (TWU alumnus) and follow up with highlights from Holst’s The Planets (a notable inspiration for the soundtrack); the Indiana Jones and Star Wars film scores (both written by Academy Award favourite John Williams); and Dvořák’s New World Symphony (a source of inspiration for the music of both Jaws and Pirates of the Caribbean).
SAMC’s 40-piece orchestra will perform works such as Strauss’ “Blue Danube Waltz,” which audiences may remember from Cool Runnings or 2001: A Space Odyssey; the Allegretto from Beethoven’s 7th Symphony, which featured prominently in the Oscar winner The King's Speech; and the iconic “Flower Duet” featuring vocal soloists Krystal McEwan and Karina Pelayo.
Ron Grypma, one of the orchestra’s long-time community members, will perform the solo in “Gabriel’s Oboe,” the main theme from The Mission.
“We’re delighted to feature the talented Ron Grypma on the oboe, as he’s been a solid member of our orchestra since 2009,” says Jon Thompson, DMA, conductor of the SAMC Orchestra. “This moving piece from is the quintessential illustration of the powerful role music can play in a story, as Jeremy Irons’ character literally uses music to save his own life.”
