TWU presents Seasons of Life + Landscape

Three celebrated choirs converge to deliver one unforgettable evening of choral music

As part of its Faculty + Friends Recital Series, TWU’s School of the Arts, Media + Culture presents “Seasons of Life + Landscape”—a not-to-be-missed evening of choral performances by the TWU Chamber Choir and special guests, Juno award nominees the Canadian Chamber Choir and Vancouver Chamber Choir. The Trinity Western University Chamber Choir performs under the direction of award-winning conductor and Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Joel Tranquilla. The evening also features Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Cellist, Ariel Barnes. In a program that highlights evocative story telling through song that is sure to delight choral music lovers, the choirs will present a range of works, from Brahms to local composers Jocelyn Morlock, Jon Washburn, Larry Nickel, and SAMC’s own Dr. David Squires.

The concert opens with Ben Duinker’s Materia ex nihilo, featuring TWU alumna Cathrie Yuen-Wong on marimba, and continues with composer Healey Willan’s choral masterpiece for double choir, An Apostrophe to the Heavenly Hosts. Known as the father of Canadian choral music, Willan composed the work in 1921 for the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, and drew from Eastern Orthodox liturgy for its text. Jocelyn Morlock, composer-in-residence for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, is represented on the program by the stunning work for choir and cello, Exaudi, which depicts the grief of losing a loved one. David Squires’ Sanctuary is a setting of text of assurance from Psalm 73.

TWU’s Professional Choir-in-Residence, the Vancouver Chamber Choir, led by Jon Washburn, consistently impresses with the depth and range of its repertoire and renowned interpretive skills. The Canadian Chamber Choir, under the direction of Julia Davids, aims to bring new and existing Canadian choral music to every corner of Canada and features some of Canada’s finest choral singers. The evening’s performances mark the culmination of the year’s collaboration between TWU and both of these outstanding professional ensembles.
