Dr. Robynne Healey explores the story of sisters Sarah and Angelina Grimké, who grew up in a slaveholding household in South Carolina in the early 1800s and who later became fervent abolitionists and advocates for women's suffrage, at the upcoming Freedom Forum series.
The Religious Freedom Center - Freedom Forum is pleased to welcome Trinity Western University Professor Robynne Healey to the Freedom Forum’s panel, “The Grimkés Speak Out on Faith, Race, and Civil Rights.” This program will take place online on Sunday afternoon, October 11 at 3:00 pm Eastern.
Professor Healey will present a narrative of Quaker sisters Angelina and Sarah Grimké, in complement to the story of Rev. Francis Grimké, which will be told by Rev. Perzavia Praylow, pastor of Rev. Grimké’s former Presbyterian church. Together, these narratives illuminate the courage, complexities, and contradictions of religious life in 19th and early 20th century America, challenging us to understand our past as a starting point for understanding our future.
About the event:
This fifth program in the Freedom Forum's series, features one of American history's most interesting families. Sisters Sarah and Angelina Grimké grew up in a slaveholding household in South Carolina in the early 1800s and later moved to Philadelphia where they became Quakers, fervent abolitionists and advocates for women's suffrage.
Back in South Carolina, their brother fathered three sons by an enslaved woman. After emancipation, son Francis Grimké became one of the most influential African American ministers and orators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. From the pulpit at 15th Street Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., Rev. Grimké's sermons challenged Americans to live up to their better angels on issues of race, religion and civil rights.
