TWU’s brand-new Robert G. Kuhn Centre is ready to welcome its first classes

The four-storey mass timber atrium building is a multi-functional facility for students and faculty

As the spring semester concludes and the summer session begins, students, staff and faculty can look forward to making use of the new and expansive spaces in the Robert G. Kuhn Centre.

Trinity Western University first broke ground on this building project in 2020, and now all the major work is completed.

This week, staff and faculty from the School of Business, GLOBAL and Student Life’s Global Engagement Office (GEO) have begun moving into the building and setting up their offices. Teams from I.T. have been on site to fine-tune AV capacities in classrooms and meeting rooms and to assist with technological set-up, while teams from Campus Services are helping colleagues get settled and oriented.

Starting May 2022, the Robert G. Kuhn Centre will host its first classes.

We thank all our colleagues who have worked so hard on this project over the past many months. We thank our donors and friends of the University, whose generous and faithful support has enabled Trinity Western to open—debt-free—this beautiful $35 million Robert G. Kuhn Centre.

About the Robert G. Kuhn Centre

The Robert G. Kuhn Centre at TWU is a $35 million, 73,000 square feet post-secondary facility. The four-storey mass timber atrium building is a landmark building that marks the entry to the university’s Langley, B.C. campus. It is the new home of the School of Business, GLOBAL, and Student Life’s Global Engagement Office (GEO), and a multi-functional facility for students and faculty.

Sustainability with function and beauty

Sustainability is important to the design team at ThinkSpace Architecture, the architectural firm who led the Robert G. Kuhn Centre building project. Their design takes advantage of natural light, with views connecting the building back to the rest of campus.

The mass timber building structure was selected to enhance the well-being of the occupants as well as ensure the construction schedule. The ability to showcase the innovation of wood structures in a post-secondary learning environment further reinforces the need for a didactic approach to sustainability in education facilities.

As well, passive strategies such as daylighting, highly efficient envelope, and the four-storey interconnected atrium which creates a thermal chimney, are all part of the building design.
