TWU’s Sustainability Series this spring (March 3-12, 2022) tackled the important global topics of climate change, climate justice and policy.
Cat Jenkins, fourth-year Biology student at TWU, kicked off the series with a presentation about the experience of attending the 2021 United Nations climate change conference, COP26. Cat was followed by Cheryl Wiens, alumna and environmental advocate, who spoke on her work of advancing climate policy.
Next up in the series, Dr. Shane Durbach, Associate Professor of Chemistry, shared his research on ways to convert plastic waste—a worldwide source of air, soil, water and marine pollution—into something beneficial for the environment. Dr. Durbach was joined by Tim Stephenson, alumnus and high school science teacher, who highlighted ways in which local Langley students are creatively addressing climate change.
To wrap up this week-long series of learning, TWU students and faculty took part in a community garbage clean-up event as a practical act of stewardship and care for the local environment.
TWU’s Sustainability Series was sponsored by the Supporting Structures grant, a $230,000 grant awarded to Trinity Western for the advancement of STEM research. The grant is generously funded by the John Templeton Foundation and the MJ Murdock Charitable Trust, and run by the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) and its UK subsidiary, Scholarship & Christianity in Oxford (SCIO). TWU’s Sustainability Series was co-hosted by TWU’s Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, TWU Environmental Club, and the Canadian Scientific and Christian Affiliation.
