Karen Larochelle, MSN
We welcome Karen Larochelle to the TWU School of Nursing as a Sessional Assistant Professor. She completed her MSN at UBC-Okanagan in 2012. Karen has worked in a variety of clinical areas, including perinatal and maternity nursing, medicine, long-term and end-of-life care, as well as being a Clinical Supervisor. She obtained an Advanced Perinatal Certificate from BCIT, and has studied women’s health. Her thesis focused on women’s sexual and reproductive health. In the past, Karen has enjoyed mentoring young people onboard a sailing ship, for over three years, when she served as Second Officer and Medical Officer for the Sail and Life Training Society (SALTS). Most recently, she facilitated reviews of quality care concerns for the Fraser Health Authority. Upon the beginning of her nursing degree at TWU in 2000, her aim was to have a “smorgasbord” of education and practice experiences, that would bring her to where she is today, as a nursing faculty member who teaches nursing students how to navigate their own dreams and careers. Karen teaches Nursing Care of the Older Adult as well as teaching in lab and clinical settings.
Sarah Liva, Ph.D.
Dr. Sarah Liva, a recent PhD graduate from the University of British Columbia, was recently appointed as Assistant Professor of Nursing at TWU. Local to the area, she has taught part-time in the School of Nursing and we welcome her warmly to a full-time tenure-track position. Her areas of research focus are maternal health promotion during the postpartum transition and inter-childbearing years and providers’ competencies in health promotion practice. Her dissertation is entitled “Reconciling resistance: Women’s postnatal physical activity decision-making” and she was supported during her doctoral studies by a CIHR Fellowship in Transdisciplinary Primary Health Care Research. Dr. Liva holds various professional affiliations, including a role as treasurer for the Vancouver chapter of the Canadian Obesity Network. Her clinical background is in labour/delivery and family practice, having worked at Ridge Meadows Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital. Sarah teaches research literacy in the undergraduate program and qualitative health research in the MSN program.
Angela Wolff, Ph.D.
We welcome Dr. Anglela Wolff to the TWU School of Nursing as Associate Professor. She is an outstanding scholar who brings research and evidence together with clinical practice for sustainable adoption. She holds numerous research awards and is networked across the province and the country. Angela is well known to TWU Nursing, having collaborated with us in various ways since 2008. She has been guest lecturer for the graduate program and co-supervisor/committee member for thesis and major papers (co-supervisor or committee member). Dr. Wolff has worked in all sectors of practice: education, regulatory, research, and practice. Angela formerly held the position of Director – Clinical Education, Professional Practice at the Fraser Health Authority. In her Director role, she delivered regional strategic planning, development, implementation, tracking, and evaluation of inter-professional clinical education programs / services for healthcare professionals and health sciences students. Angela is a Certified Health Executive with the Canadian College of Health Leaders. Passionate about undergraduate, graduate, and ongoing post-licensure education, Angela has sought to support new graduate nurse transition, educator/clinical teacher development, specialty education, and practice changes.
Each of our new faculty are well known to us as each of them has worked for the School of Nursing in some capacity (e.g., clinical supervision, part-time instruction, thesis supervision) and we are so pleased they are now with us on a full-time basis.
