Linguistics & World Languages Programs
Language & Linguistics
Bachelor of Arts, Courses
Students choose courses in linguistics and one of the languages offered by the Linguistics & World Languages Department: French, Spanish, or Chinese. Pairing in-depth language and culture study with a solid grounding in linguistics is an excellent way for students to become language specialists, with the ability to understand the linguistic intricacies of their chosen language of study, and with the capacity to use their linguistic skills to study other languages as well. The BA in Language and Linguistics is good preparation for the Master of Arts in Linguistics program, offered through Trinity Western’s Faculty of Graduate Studies, or the Master of Arts in Linguistics and Translation program, offered through Trinity Western’s Graduate School of Theological Studies. Students of language and linguistics have opportunities in the areas of translation, cross-cultural communication, international development, language documentation and revitalization, and speech-language pathology.
French
Concentration, Minor, Courses
Our French program helps students acquire essential skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening comprehension while imparting a love for French-speaking people. Our program spans the globe by exploring past and present cultures of France, Quebec, other areas of French Canada, and other francophone countries. All levels of language study are offered, and students can choose between two streams: French studies and French language & literature. Both streams lead to a minor or concentration in French. For those not planning to complete a minor or concentration but who take at least five French courses, we offer a Letter of Proficiency. During summer, study trips to France or Quebec are available.
Spanish
Concentration, Minor, Courses
Our program offers a comprehensive curriculum that teaches both language and culture, allowing you to interact with a large and growing population. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in missions trips and trade agreements. Our courses feature the use of videos and websites, the development of basic skills, and the introduction to Spanish literature.
